Summary: Nicholas isn't sure why Zazie is with Meryl. He'll find out.

Nicholas waited until Meryl's back was turned before he grabbed Zazie by the scruff and carried them into the shadow of another building, out of her line of sight. Zazie didn't collapse into a swarm of worms and fly off, but there were people around, watching. Zazie didn't struggle or make a sound, playing the innocent kid. Bastard.

"What's your game, Zazie?" he growled when he let go of Zazie.

Zazie looked up at him, wide-eyed. "Game?" they repeated as they straightened their hair. "Why would you think I'm playing something?"

Nicholas chewed on his smoke stub as he gritted his teeth. "Because it's you and you do this shit for fun. So-" He leaned over Zazie, the worm not retreating and just tilted their head up to face them. "-what're you doing?"

"Nothing. Meryl said she wanted me to meet someone." They looked him up and down and then snorted. "I was expecting someone interesting."

That couldn't be it. There had to be something else Zazie was doing, a reason why they'd gone back to see Meryl.

Zazie looked past him and their face softened into a smile as they waved.

Nicholas looked over his shoulder and he wiped the scowl off his face, seeing Meryl there.

"There you two are," she said. "It's good to see you're getting on - I thought you'd disappeared on me."

Zazie squeezed past Nicholas to jog to Meryl's side. "We wouldn't do that, would we, Nicholas?" Out of Meryl's line of sight, Zazie smirked at him.

He dropped his smouldering smoke and stomped on it. "Nah."

He watched Meryl and Zazie walk away as he pulled out another smoke. He'd figure out what the hell Zazie was doing with her.

Ladymaliwan is an enabler (affectionate). Maybe set after Hand Outstretched (that I haven't started posting yet) and Zazie is being a teasing shit or maybe this is a separate verse and Zazie is actually being a Shit. All I have of this for the moment but, uh, that's what I thought about Hand Outstretched too, haha.
