Muzaka opened his eyes, frowning. He listened, but he couldn't hear what had woken – Frankenstein's breathing was uneven. When Muzaka turned over, Frankenstein was stiff, and he could see a soft sheen of sweat across his brow. Damn. Exhaling, Muzaka placed a hand on Frankenstein's shoulder.
Nothing.
No reaction to it.
All right.
Muzaka wrapped his arm around Frankenstein's arms, pinning him in place. Even that wasn’t enough to make him stir. The nightmare had to be deep then.
"Oi," Muzaka murmured in Frankenstein's ear, giving him a little shake. "Wake up."
Frankenstein hissed, but that was it. No. This time there was more of a whine there.
Muzaka shook him again, harder. "Ya need ta wake up."
This time Frankenstein did and Muzaka held him tight as Frankenstein struggled against him.
"It's just me," Muzaka repeated in his ear until Frankenstein stilled.
"Muzaka?" Frankenstein croaked, his breathing still harsh.
"Yeah, it's me," Muzaka said, loosening his hold now that it was obvious Frankenstein wouldn't throw himself out the bed.
"Thank..." Frankenstein exhaled. "I'm fine."
Muzaka snorted, lifting a hand to brush away some of the sweat trickling down Frankenstein's neck. "Right. An' I'm human." He clearly wasn’t.
"Ah..."
Frankenstein swallowed, and only the sound of the wind blowing past filled the silence. "Thank you," Frankenstein said as he turned around, burying his face in the crook of Muzaka's neck. "Could you...stay, right now?"
Muzaka chuckled softly, wrapping his arm around Frankenstein again, holding him close. "I'm right here, and I ain't gonna go anywhere."
Muzaka held Frankenstein while he trembled, his breathing still not quite evening out, and it was a while until Frankenstein eventually drifted off again.
Inspired by apocryphaprompts' prompt, '“Stay with me.”
“I’m here, love, I’m here.”'
