Tao grimaced as he...woke up? Where was-

Oh. Right.

But this wasn't his and Takeo's room. It was too bright for a start. Too spac-

He stared at Em, who was watching him from the foot of his bed.

Uhhm.

Shit.

Was Em going to kill him? Right after what had happened with Yuri? ...What had even happened with Yuri? He remembered being used as a punching bag, but after that... How had he even-

Em shot up with a clatter. When Tao tried to put as much space as he could between them, he hissed, his arm and ribs throbbing. Broken arm. There wasn't much he could d-

Em raced out of the room.

...Okay?

Maybe the pain and whatever Yuri had injected him with was making him loopy. Was he hallucinating? That made sense. Who knew what else that drug was doing to his system. Maybe multiple drugs. Who knew? Tao didn't.

His arm was in a cast, and that was kinda cool. He knocked on it his knuckles, and winced. The pain felt real.

Takeo was in the other bed, and yeah, he was hallucinating. There was no way people would have been able to find both him and Takeo in their room.

He looked over at the sound of a door opening, and blinked when Frankenstein walked in.

Wait. Tao looked around again. Beds, hooked up to a heart monitor, white tiles everywhere... He tried to place all the clues from the view he was more familiar with in security. "I'm in the medbay?"

"You are indeed," Frankenstein said with a smile. "How are you feeling?"

"Really, really confused? I don't even know how I got here."

"Some confusion isn't much of a surprise considering what you've been through," Frankenstein said, checking Tao's temperature. He made a note in his pad once the results came through. "Em is the one who brought you here, and Muzaka found Takeo thanks to your ID card." Frankenstein nodded to Tao's wallet on the bedside table.

"Oh. Okay." Because what else could he say to that? Em hadn't killed him off? Or left him to die? Em had to be an imposter!

Just like Yuri had to be a crewmate? Yuri hadn't transformed, but other than that, Yuri had acted pretty imposter-like.

Tao chilled. Wait. What had happened to Yuri? How hadn't Yuri came to finish them both off?

Was it because of Em?

"Sooo anything interesting happen while we were out?" Tao asked, watching for any change of Frankenstein's expression, if he knew anything.

"Hmm," Frankenstein said as he checked Tao's and Takeo's IV drips. "Mary noticed Yuri's biometric data had ceased."

What?

"His body hasn't been found," Frankenstein continued, "and the others initially thought Em was also dead because he refused to leave your sides for the meeting." Frankenstein chuckled softly.

Tao stared at him. Em hadn't-? He groaned, squeezing his eyes shut. His head was so sluggish trying to take in this information and process it.

"Do you need more pain medication?"

"No. I don't - I don't think so?" If he didn't jostle anything, he was okay. That wasn't the problem.

Yuri had been killed? But if Em had been with him the whole time (not killing him) then who had killed Yuri? Had Em killed Yuri and then found him? But why kill Yuri and not him?

So, was it Muzaka then?

But if it was... That still didn't explain being left alone in a room with Em and not being killed.

Urgh. Tao's brain hurt.

Thinking for later?

Seemed like the better idea right now, than trying to force his brain to do something it was incapable of doing right now.

Takeo stirred right then, making Tao grin in relief as Frankenstein turned to tend to him.

Things were okay. He and Takeo were alive, and Yuri was dead (somehow). He could think through everything later.

* * *

Tao sat down on his and Takeo's bed with a sigh. Their new one, because it was just easier to move their small amount of stuff to an empty quarter than stare at the wreck of their room, and remember everything that had happened.

They could clean it up when they weren't as hopped up on painkillers.

"How are you doing?" Takeo asked, sitting next to him.

"I'm alive?" Tao shrugged. It felt weird with the cast. "You?"

Takeo nodded. "Alive. Somehow."

Tao smiled weakly, leaning on Takeo's shoulder. "Yeah." They were lucky Yuri had been vindictive for whatever reason, rather than killing them outright.

Lucky...

"If Em hadn't found me..." Tao let out a long breath, closing his eyes. "Neither of us would have made it." He could think clearer now, but it still didn't make any sense to him.

Nothing Em did made sense to Tao anymore. Staying in his and Takeo's room and keeping an eye on them. Protecting them, keeping an eye on their vitals. Em had been the one to call Frankenstein to check on them when they woke up, and then brought food for them after.

That was the exact opposite of what an imposter was supposed to do.

Tao let out a soft laugh. He winced. Ow. Even breathing too hard hurt sometimes. "I thought I knew who to look out for, but I guess not, huh?" Was there anyone else like that among the crewmates? Tao had thought Yuri was a little stiff, but angry enough to torture them like that?

"Not anymore."

Tao spluttered at that, even as his ribs ached. "Okay, fair." They didn't need to look out for Yuri, not unless he'd somehow dug out his tracker, and Tao doubted that.

He yawned, resisting the urge to stretch. Urgh, even that was enough to tire him out. He shuffled up to lean on the headboard, Takeo following.

Yeah, Tao had a feeling they weren't going to be lying in bed for a while now, just in case.
