M-21 sighed as he leaned back on the balcony, elbows propped on the banister. M-24 stood next to him, facing out towards the street, covering his blind spot like M-21 was covering his.

They’d been in far worse places but even thinking about the people inside the house they were in made M-21 pull his lips back in disgust. It was all an elaborate act, a trick to make them put their guard down and tell whatever secrets they knew.

Like anyone would be nice to trash like them without having an ulterior motive, hah. The only currency he and M-24 had was information, and it was only a matter of time before their captors got frustrated and tried to take it by force. Not that they had any information, but their captors didn’t know that.

M-21 lifted his head at a soft scrabbling sound, frowning. It was like something was scratching at a door. He hadn’t heard anyone else in the house and he and M-24 had checked the other rooms — they’d all been empty (another sloppy mistake, proving the house was just a temporary front).

A door to their right clicked and swung open. There was a snuffling sound coming from it and — right. That room was Kentas’.

What stepped out of his room wasn’t Kentas.

It was a fucking bear.

Not quite, M-21 watching it as it lifted its head to sniff the air. The snout and ears were wrong, smaller than they should…be.

M-21 straightened as the beast turned its head towards them. That wasn’t a bear, that was a wolf.

This one was twice the size of any wolves M-21 had seen, standing almost at shoulder height and so barrel-chested it was almost was wide as M-24.

“No way,” he whispered. That was what his transformation could become?

The wolf — Kentas perked up at the sight of them and leaped forward, jaws open, ready to tear them apart and shit, they were dead!

There was no way they could hope to fight him off, not when Kentas had them beat without even transforming. They wouldn’t even be able to run.

Except Kentas halted, his claws scoring the floor as he dug them in, whining as he backed off a few steps.

What…? M-21′s heart thudded, and his hands itched, ready for him to transform. He glanced at ‘24, but while his comrade was staring at Kentas, he wasn’t mind controlling him.

Kentas stayed where he was, dipping his head to sniff the ground and looking at the walls.

It wasn’t that Kentas couldn’t see him, the werewolf glancing at them for a second before looking away again. It didn’t seem like he found the scent he was looking for, because Kentas then…went down and rolled onto his side, his tail thumping against the floor. He was still watching them though, like he was expecting something.

M-21 and M-24 shared a look and then M-21 shook his head, tearing his gaze away from the werewolf. Kentas could do whatever the fuck he wanted; he had the power to.

“If you’re wondering what Kentas is doing,” M-21 heard Frankenstein say, his voice coming up the stairs before the man appeared, “he’s trying to be as unintimidating as he can be.”

Kentas’ tail thumped harder.

“We could hear him moving from downstairs,” Frankenstein said, shooting Kentas a wry look.

Kentas made a snuffling sound at that and M-21 narrowed his eyes at the werewolf, studying him again. Was he…?

“It would appear he’s instinctual at the moment,” Frankenstein said.

“He would have killed us then,” ‘24 said, M-21 giving a short nod.

Frankenstein shook his head. “Being instinctual only means that the individual no longer hides behind masks and shows their true selves. Seeing as Kentas is a rather straightforward individual, there’s almost no difference between how he normally is and his instinctual state.” A smile quirked Frankenstein’s lips. “Well, aside from the current body language he’s using.”

That…didn’t make sense. If -if- what Frankenstein was saying was true, then that meant…

But M-21 could see it, see how Kentas had backed off every fucking time something had slipped through the cracks of M-21′s control (and M-21 had hated it, hated how easily Kentas could read him, see what he’d tried to hide). How Kentas had kept looking away from him that, from anyone else, would have looked like nervousness, but when Kentas did it, he made it look like a deliberate act, but M-21 couldn’t figure out what Kentas had been trying to do with that.

If Kentas really had no intention of harming them, then…did that mean everything he and M-24 had assumed about their captors was wrong?
