Frankenstein saw movement in the corner of his eye as he read. A small, black and white movement.

It was obvious who it was even before that, because M-21 wouldn't jump up to the sofa, let alone use the stairs to climb up to the sofa.

"Hello," he said as Tao padded over to his side with purpose. "Do you want something?" It wasn't near dinner time, so he shouldn't be hungry, but then, it was never easy to tell with Tao.

"Mrow," Tao said, hopping up to Frankenstein's lap.

"Just scratches, then?" Frankenstein said, patting Tao's back.

Tao purred at his touch, arching his back.

Satisfied that was all Tao wanted, Frankenstein started reading again.

When he lifted his hand away to turn the page, Tao cried out.

"It's only for a second," Frankenstein assured him, turning the page and returning his hand.

"Mrrrow!" Tao ducked away, his attention on Frankenstein's book.

"You can't read it," Frankenstein said, amused, lowering his hand so Tao could see the book better.

Tao didn't seem to mind, going up to his back legs so he could brace his front paws on the paper to sniff at the paper. Tao looked at him over his shoulder, his tail twitching, and meowed again.

"Do you want me to read it to you?" Frankenstein said. Hm, it would be slower that way, but doing so would help him to internalise the information better.

"All right," Frankenstein said. "Are you settled?"

Tao meowed again, staring at the words.

Ah well. If Tao got tired standing like that, he would sit down when he wanted.

Continuing to pet Tao, Frankenstein started reading out loud.
