There were little origami animals made out of newspaper or leaflets all over M-21’s desk. A couple of swans and dogs and other animals Tao couldn’t identify — a lot of them were lopsided, with evidence of being refolded again.
It technically wasn’t that weird, but M-21 didn’t so much keep his room neat as he didn’t really do anything to personalise it. So it was weird for M-21.
“Hey, M,” Tao said, turning away from the desk, “did ya make…”
M-21 raised an eyebrow at him from his bed, his hands moving over a piece of paper, deliberately folding it.
“Heh.” Tao went over, peering at what M-21 was making. “How long you been doing this?” Tao went into M-21’s room pretty regularly and hadn’t seen any evidence of this before.
M-21 shrugged, still folding. “Last week.” He pursed his lips, his gaze going distant. “Practicing my transformation was getting frustrating.”
“Huh.” Tao watched M-21 continue folding. He probably thought he wasn’t getting stronger fast enough, but at least M-21 had decided to take a break rather than pushing too hard. Though… “Still needed to do somethin’ with yer hands?”
M-21 nodded. “It felt weird not doing anything.”
Tao chuckled. “Yeah, I can understand that feeling. Show me?” Tao said, dropping down next to him.
“Sure.”

The origami disappeared the next day, and didn’t reappear for a week. They were better made, the edges crisper. M-21 wasn’t in the room when Tao entered, and he left the book of origami paper on M-21’s bedside table.
[In case you wanted to stop searching for scrap to fold <3] he wrote on the cover before leaving.

The origami animals kept coming and going, still made out of scrap paper. M-21 was using the origami paper, a few sheets disappearing every so often, but they weren’t on display like the others. Maybe he didn’t like the final result and trashed them instantly.
Tao rubbed his sore neck muscles as he entered his room. The patch had gone through without too many mishaps, but it had still taken longer than he’d want…
Tao knew his room. As much as Takeo and M-21 commented whenever they came in, he knew where everything was. So long as he knew the system, that was what was most important and it didn’t matter if the others didn’t, since they didn’t need what he did.
So he knew there was something new as soon as he swept his eyes over his room.
Grinning, he went to his bedside table, scooping up the black origami tarantula there. It was made from the origami paper, looking more complicated than the ones on M-21’s desk. There was a note underneath.
[Thanks.]
“Heh, straight to the point as always.”
Now to figure out where to put it.
