There was a familiar scent in Takeo's room when he woke up. And there was someone else there with him, seated right across from his bed.
There was only one person who would enter his room while he was sleeping.
"What is it?" Takeo asked, opening his eyes. Tao was there, one foot braced on Takeo's bed while he balanced the chair back on two legs. It wasn't an emergency or else Tao would have woken him up, not waited.
"You, mister," Tao said, pointing a finger at him, lifting his leg so the chair came back down, his finger going closer to Takeo, "need to go back to sleep."
Takeo blinked. Tao waited for him to wake up just to tell him to go back to sleep?
Some of Takeo's hair had fallen in front of his face, but when he raised a hand to brush it away, a flash of colour caught his eye.
His nails had been painted pink. That was the sharp smell that was in Takeo's room.
He sighed at Tao, who was already handing him the nail polish remover.
“Do I even want to ask why you painted my nails while I was sleeping?” It wasn't for a prank - Tao wasn't recording, and Tao was giving him the solution straight away.
"Testing something," Tao said. "And that's why you need to go back to sleep - you've been holdin' out on us."
"I...haven't," Takeo said, his gaze dipping as he cleaned his nails. "It's just been a few restless nights." They usually didn't last long.
"Uh-huh." Tao scrunched up his nose. "It's been enough that I can sneak inta yer room and paint yer nails without waking you up."
Takeo didn't say anything as he cleaned the nail polish off. There wasn't anything to say to that, because it was the truth.
"Was it that obvious?" Takeo asked as he threw the used cotton balls away. He had thought he was still acting normal.
"Well, yeah," Tao said with a shrug. "To me. Dunno about the others." He looked at Takeo, a small frown on his face. "I've known you for years - I can tell if you're not at your best. Especially when you're trying to hide it."
Takeo gave him a small smile as he set the nail polish remover onto his bedside table. "I'll try to go back to sleep then." He couldn't promise that he would be able to rest.
Tao's frown faded. "Want some company in case you don't?"
At the question, Takeo continued smiling, lifting his arm up. "You already know the answer."
"Hey, it's good to ask too." Tao squeezed into Takeo's bed before Takeo could make more space for him.
"Mm." Takeo sighed as Tao curled up against him, already starting to drift off again.
