Tao draped his arms over M-21's shoulders while M-21 sat on the sofa. "Are ya busy?" Tao asked.
M-21 leaned his head back to look at Tao. "What have you planned?"
Tao huffed, which ruffled M-21's hair. "Who says I've planned anything?"
"Because you wouldn't ask otherwise." If Tao needed something, he would have asked already. "What is it?"
"Heh, can't get anything past you," Tao said, leaning in more and holding his phone up for M-21 to see. "Weeell, I saw a cat cafe earlier on and was wondering if you wanted to go!"
M-21 stared at the photo Tao was showing. It did look like a room filled with cats. "A cat cafe."
"Yup, that's what I said."
Tao prodded M-21's forehead when he grimaced. "What?"
"Cats," M-21 repeated.
Tao snickered, hugging M-21. "Hey, I'm not saying they're going to instinctively hate you or anything. And if they do react to ya on sight, cats can get on with dogs, you know. Which you aren't. Just saying."
M-21 sighed. "Fine." He only seemed to attract dogs' attention and if he did this, he would know if he do it again. It would stop Tao from asking again if it didn't work out.
"Great!" Tao kissed M-21 on the temple. "I'll go get Takeo."
* * *
The cafe was quiet when M-21, Takeo and Tao entered it. There was a room connected to it, where M-21 could see all the cats. They didn't all turn their heads towards him as soon as he stepped in, but there was still a door between them. Maybe they hadn't smelled him yet.
Tao sorted out drinks and food and since there was no-one else there, they could enter the cat room straight away.
When Takeo opened the door, nothing happened. When M-21 stepped into the room, nothing happened. Almost nothing. A few of the cats turned their heads towards them, but other than that, stayed where they were. There were no puffed up bodies, hissing or bared teeth in his direction.
Huh.
"You can breathe again, M," Tao said, chuckling as he patted M-21's shoulder. "See? They don't hate you."
"I wasn't holding my breath," M-21 muttered, closing the door behind them. He'd been wary, because who knew what was going to happen when it involved something he couldn't control.
He followed Takeo to one of the tables by a wall, rather than the ones in the centre and they watched as Tao tried to take pictures of every single cat there.
The food was fine, and nothing was trying to attack them so it was...nice.
Halfway through his tea, something brushed against M-21's leg. He glanced down - there was a cat there. It was mostly white with orange patches, and it was rubbing up against his leg.
Okay...? Still not puffed up or trying to bite him. Huh.
"Hey!" He tensed when another cat jumped onto his lap and curled up there, looking like it was going to sleep.
"I don't think they mind your presence," Takeo said, and M-21 was sure the other man was smiling. He couldn't see it though, since Takeo was sipping from his cup just then.
M-21 let out a breath he hadn't realised he'd been keeping. It was fine. The cats didn't hate him. He may be losing his humanity but cats weren't reacting to him like dogs did. "Ye - oi." He lifted his plate away from a cat that had jumped up onto the table to investigate it.
The cat meowed at him, pawing towards the plate.
They definitely didn't mind him.
M-21 heard the click of Tao's camera and didn't look him, focusing on the cat in case it decided to climb him.
"This is the best," Tao said, sitting across from M-21, taking pictures of both him and Takeo. The cat at Takeo's legs hadn't jumped up yet, but it had stood up to investigate Takeo's lap.
They stayed like that for a while, Tao coaxing M-21 to pet the cats. It wasn't that much different from petting the puppy, except he shouldn't touch their stomachs if they rolled over.
"So what do you think?" Tao asked as they left. "Wanna do that again?"
"The food was nice and the cats were cute," Takeo said.
The cats hadn't tried to chase him out and it had been quiet while they'd been there. "Yeah."
Tao hugged them both with a laugh. "Great! We'll make this a weekly thing then."
Sounded like fun.
