Frankenstein hummed, scanning the dark park as he sipped his coffee. He'd been told there had been a werewolf sighted around here, but there had only been one call so far - usually there was more, rumours taking its time to reach his ears. Werewolves weren't well known to be unobtrusive, especially when they roamed around in packs. The caller had mentioned only seeing one, which was also unlikely, but Frankenstein left his vet surgery nevertheless, in case it was a true sighting. If it wasn't, there was a chance he would find something else that needed treated. Tao was in charge in his absence, but Frankenstein didn't think there would be any trouble from that side that would require his attention. That wasn't Tao-initiated, anyway.
A flutter of wings as a group of pigeons scattered into the sky and Frankenstein narrowed his eyes, lowering his coffee.
He could see a shape outside the light cast by the park lamps. Too big to be dog, the limbs not in proportion either, with longer front limbs. One of the back limbs was at a strange angle too, paw hanging in the air rather than touching the ground.
Injured, then. Though Frankenstein couldn't guess what from.
Frankenstein must have moved because the figure disappeared. Wary of humans was a rather strange trait for a werewolf, but that could be why they were alone.
Frankenstein threw his coffee in the bin, reaching for the bag he'd brought with him. Traps were pointless with werewolves since they were too big and strong to be contained for long, but there were other ways to catch and subdue a werewolf.
He threw a piece of prepared food in the direction of where the werewolf had been. He hadn't heard too much noise when the werewolf left, so they shouldn't have gone far.
It only took a minute before the shadows shifted, the werewolf edging closer. The werewolf hesitated and then pounced on the food, snapping it up.
They were small, silver fur patchy and that was enough to see the bones jutting against their skin. The blood was still fresh on their fur and wet, so the injury must have just happened.
Frankenstein threw out another piece of food, the werewolf skittering back a few steps and glancing between Frankenstein and the food. The werewolf didn't take as long to lunge forward and snap up the food.
The werewolf was small enough that that should be enough bait for the sedatives to take effect. Even as Frankenstein thought that, the werewolf wavered on their paws, slumping to the ground.
Frankenstein hurried over, watching for any reactions but the werewolf had relaxed already. Even so, the werewolf would already be fighting against the sedative so he didn't have that much time.
The werewolf was lighter than Frankenstein expected when he picked them up. That explained why they had been affected so easily. Their leg hung awkwardly, showing it still hadn't united yet, which would make easier to deal with than a malunion.
Tao was waiting at the vet surgery entrance as Frankenstein pulled up in the car and helped Frankenstein transport the werewolf in.
"Where's the rest of his pack?" Tao asked, neck craning to look around the darkness.
"He was alone," Frankenstein said, running through everything he would need in theatre. The werewolf's behaviour alone pointed to that, but Frankenstein also wasn't followed on the way to the clinic.
"Aww, poor guy." Tao patted the werewolf's head, which didn't elicit a response.
Frankenstein frowned, checking the werewolf's vitals again. Slower bone healing and the reaction to the drugs... The werewolf was scarred up, one right across their snout. The werewolf was worse off than he expected.
"What's in his ear?" Tao asked.
In his-? Frankenstein hadn't checked much else, focusing on the leg. There were dark marks on one of the werewolf's ears, stark under the clinic's bright lights.
Frankenstein pulled it back to get a better look, revealing a tattoo stamped inside, saying 'M-21' and a barcode underneath.
The letters were old, faded in places and the colour bleeding elsewhere. "Just what has been done to you...?" Frankenstein muttered, the hints sliding into place. This was something he would need to investigate more thoroughly. Later.
Right now, he had to fix the werewolf's leg.
* * *
"What do you think of 'Min-gyu', Boss?" Tao asked as Frankenstein fitted the e-collar and mittens. Those were no match against a werewolf's claws, but it should be enough to distract him enough to let the bone heal.
"You can write that down if you want to." Frankenstein doubted they would see the werewolf -or Min-gyu as Tao was suggesting- again after tonight, but stranger things had happened. They did have a few regular supernatural beings that visited one way or another.
Frankenstein had barely left the recovery room when he heard a knocking at the backdoor. Speaking of repeat visitors, Frankenstein had an inkling of who that could be.
He was unsurprised to see a much larger werewolf compared to his current patient standing in the doorway. As soon as Frankenstein opened the door, the werewolf's tail started wagging.
"Muzaka," Frankenstein greeted with a raised eyebrow. The leader of the local pack seemed to react to the name Frankenstein had given him. "Did you see him come in or did you smell him?" Min-gyu certainly wasn't part of Muzaka's pack, being uncared for as well as having that tattoo.
"Hrr."
Helpful. He knew Muzaka was smarter than the average domestic dog and even a number of humans Frankenstein knew, but communication between the two of them wasn't the easiest to understand.
Frankenstein snapped his head at a yelp behind him, already hurrying back. He heard Muzaka follow after him, claws clipping against the floor.
He found Tao in the recovery room, trying to close the cage door on Min-gyu, who wasn't fully conscious, but even with mittens on he would still have the strength to do some damage if he tried to escape.
Frankenstein didn't say anything, Muzaka already bounding past him as Min-gyu crashed forward, the door slamming against the cage beside it.
Tao scrambled away as Muzaka caught Min-gyu, dragging the werewolf away from Tao and Frankenstein and trapping him in the corner of the room. Min-gyu snarled, fangs bared, but his ears were flat and his eyes wide.
When Min-gyu lunged forward, fangs snapping at Muzaka's snout, Muzaka pushed Min-gyu to the side and then - flopped on top of Min-gyu.
Min-gyu froze for a second, and then tried to escape, wriggling in every direction, but Muzaka's bulk was so much more in comparison that he didn't move.
"Be careful of his leg!" Frankenstein and Tao didn't spend all that time fixing Min-gyu's leg for Muzaka to immediately break it again.
Muzaka nodded, shifting his weight to be closer to Min-gyu's upper body. And then he started grooming Min-gyu. The e-collar was in the way of Min-gyu's head, but Muzaka groomed Min-gyu's back in long sweeps, rumbling the entire time.
Min-gyu stopped struggling and as each second passed, he slowly relaxed, his breathing calming down as well.
Frankenstein eyed the cage Tao had tried to keep Min-gyu in - while they were big enough for an averaged sized werewolf, Muzaka was not that, and having two in there would leave almost no space left to move.
"You will just need to stay here for a few hours," Frankenstein said. Keeping a werewolf in a cage was hard enough, but considering Min-gyu's history... It would be torture to keep him in one again. With Muzaka there, if Min-gyu tried to escape again, Muzaka could lead him in the right direction rather than leaving a path of destruction trying to find the exit. "Then you can leave."
Min-gyu stared up at him, but he wasn't sure how much the werewolf understood, especially with everything else that had happened.
Frankenstein glanced at his watch. It was almost time for the surgery to open for regular patients again. "I'll pop in and check on you from time to time." And to see if they were both still here.
But for now, he had to get ready for the new day.
* * *
Frankenstein exhaled as he walked towards the back of the surgery. His furry patients had mostly been fine, but it was their humans that he found...testing at times. He'd been so busy he hadn't had time to take a break or look in on his newest patient.
The door was still closed when he approached and the room was quiet. He eased the door open and...ah.
He sighed. That explained why Min-gyu hadn't tried to escape yet: Muzaka was laying on top of him, pinning him to the floor, Min-gyu's casted leg and snout the only things Frankenstein could see past all of Muzaka's fur. There were empty bowls next to them, so someone else had come to feed them.
Muzaka wagged his tail as Frankenstein approached. "Thank you for looking after him," Frankenstein said, Muzaka's tail wagging harder. "Can I check on him?" It would be hard to do as Min-gyu currently was.
Muzaka stood up, shaking himself off and sending fur flying.
Min-gyu eyed him but stayed on the ground.
"I'm going to look at your leg," Frankenstein said, keeping his voice soft and soothing.
Min-gyu tried to shuffle back towards the wall, not looking at him. Definitely unusual behaviour for a werewolf - Frankenstein didn't like to imagine what had been done to make the werewolf act like that.
Min-gyu let him come closer though and while he did flinch at Frankenstein's touch, it seemed it was more from the touch itself than feeling pain or tenderness.
Everything seemed to still be in place, but there was only one way to make sure. Hopefully the werewolf's temperament would work in his favour.
"Can you come with me?" Frankenstein asked, taking a few steps back.
Min-gyu looked at him and then stood up, Muzaka going to his side, nudging shoulders with Min-gyu.
"Thank you."
Min-gyu tilted his head, brow furrowing.
Why did it not surprise Frankenstein that Min-gyu hadn't heard that phrase before.
Frankenstein lead them to the x-ray room and he saw Min-gyu's ears flatten as soon as they entered.
"This will be quick," Frankenstein said. Min-gyu continued to listen to him as Frankenstein instructed him and he was sure Muzaka was telling Min-gyu more information since Muzaka had seen the x-ray being used before (including himself since his bones had malunited a number of times).
Min-gyu still hadn't moved when Frankenstein opened the door again afterwards or even when Muzaka nosed at him.
The x-ray revealed a well-united femur, making Frankenstein smile. "Well then," he said to Min-gyu, "your leg is healed."
That made Min-gyu's ears slowly prick up.
Muzaka nosed at Min-gyu again before grabbing him and moving to pull him off the table.
"Muzaka!" Frankenstin scolded, making Muzaka freeze. "I don't want him breaking his leg again because he fell to the floor."
Muzaka whined but let go.
"And I need to remove the cast first, though I suspect you would be able to do that yourself." He would like to double-check how the wound had healed himself though.
Min-gyu still hadn't moved, staring up at him with wide eyes, and stayed like that while Frankenstein removed the cast and e-collar.
The wound was fine, fur already starting to sprout along where Tao had shaved to clear the area before operating.
"Everything is fine," Frankenstein said, taking a step back, not blocking the doorway. "You can go."
From the x-ray room, it was a straight path to the outside.
"Just remember to open the door first," he directed towards Muzaka, an eyebrow raised. There was no small number of times where Muzaka had been so excited to leave he'd gone straight through the door instead and Frankenstein doubted both of them would be patient enough to wait for him to walk on his slow human legs to open the door first.
Muzaka nodded once and then disappeared. Frankenstein heard the back door open.
Min-gyu was still on the table, looking at him.
Frankenstein took another deliberate step away from the door. "You can go," he repeated, gesturing away from himself.
Min-gyu scrambled away and once it was quiet again, Frankenstein looked around with a sigh. Now to clean up the room's worth of fur they had both left behind.
* * *
"You called for me?" Frankenstein said, poking his head into the reception area.
Tao pointed to the camera feed under the desk that looked out behind the surgery. On the screen were two familiar werewolves.
"I hope they're here for a visit rather than treatment again," Frankenstein muttered as he turned to leave, Tao's snickers following him. It had only been a week since he'd seen them last, but that was more than enough time to get into mischief. Reassuringly, all limbs seemed to be in place and there had been no blood to be seen.
Muzaka was ready as soon as Frankenstein opened the door and Frankenstein caught the werewolf as he launched himself at Frankenstein. He sighed into fur as he pressed his hands past layers of fur to scritch Muzaka's skin.
"You're meant to be wild animals," Frankenstein grumbled, but he didn't let go. Intelligent wild animals, yes, but still wild animals nevertheless.
Muzaka wasn't listening of course, head roaming around Frankenstein's scrubs, making Frankenstein step back with a shake of the head.
"Indeed I brought snacks," he said, fishing them out of a pocket before Muzaka ripped it open to get at it. Again.
One piece was licked out of Frankenstein's fingers in an instant and Frankenstein held Muzaka's snout away when he tried to get to the other one.
"You've had one already," Frankenstein said, holding the other out to Min-gyu. He felt Min-gyu sniffing at his fingers while trying to fight Muzaka.
Min-gyu took the snack from him like it was made of brittle glass and stepped back before eating it.
"Are you here for a check-up?"
At his words, Min-gyu's ears snapped down and he whined.
Frankenstein had been distracted with work, but he should really start looking into groups that had the capability to hold werewolves.
"I just want to make sure your leg has healed properly," Frankenstein said, kneeling down. An x-ray shouldn't be needed if Min-gyu wasn't in pain.
Muzaka leaned over to nudge Min-gyu. It took a few seconds but Min-gyu turned so his injured leg was closer to Frankenstein.
The leg was soft and not hot to touch, with fur completely covering the area that had been shaved back. Min-gyu didn't flinch away to Frankenstein's touch and Frankenstein could barely feel the scar either. Min-gyu was clearly putting his full weight on his leg without problems so there must not be pain there.
"It all seems to be in order," Frankenstein said, straightening and brushing off his knees. "You don't need to come back again."
Min-gyu perked up - and was gone from Frankenstein's sight, making him chuckle. "You didn't have to drag him here," Frankenstein said, glancing at Muzaka. As look as the metalwork didn't break, werewolf healing would take care of the rest.
"Hnng." Muzaka pushed his forehead into Frankenstein's own and left.
Well. A check-up visit was much more preferable than trying to catch and treat one of them anyway.
