Rain thudded against the windows, and M-21 huffed, keeping an ear turned towards it. Tao didn’t seem bothered by it – in fact, he was alternating between his toys and watching the rain drip past the windows.
It was much better inside when it rained. Even though M-21's coat was thicker now so he wouldn’t feel it, it was just...nice to be dry when-
He flinched at the light that lit up the sky, a low growl following it a few seconds later. It wasn't a fight. He knew that. He couldn’t feel any auras nearby, no killing intent. He still tensed when more lightning flashed, looking where to dodge.
"Mrow?"
And Tao had noticed, coming up to him and pressing his body against M-21's leg. "Mrow."
M-21 exhaled, licking Tao's head, making his ears twitch. He could do this. He was fi-
He hunched over at the next lightning flash, and headed for the corner furthest away from the garden doors. He would have gone to his bed, but he would be trapped there if... Just in case something did attack them, it would be better if he could move easier.
Tao followed him, and when M-21 curled up in the corner, Tao pushed up against him, purring as hard as he could. At least one of them enjoyed the storm.
M-21 didn’t look up when he heard the living room door open, too focused on listening for when the next lightning strike would happen.
"M-21?"
Oh, it was Frankenstein. M-21 tried to wag his tail in greeting, but it was tucked away and stiff.
"What's wr-"
Another flash and M-21 flinched again, not able to stop his whine clawing out his throat. He was a guard; he shouldn’t be scared. He would be punished for showing weakness.
"Ah, I hadn't thought..."
M-21 curled up tighter when he saw Frankenstein's slippered feet near him, but he snapped his head up when he felt Frankenstein pet his head, seeing Frankenstein's smiling face.
"Let's go downstairs, shall we?"
To be punished? But...Frankenstein usually wanted something if he asked M-21 to go into the lab. And Frankenstein didn’t smile like that when he was angry either.
Slowly, M-21 got to his feet, and Frankenstein continued smiling at him. It would be all right? M-21 trot – he dashed out at the next lightning flash, not wanting to wait for the thunder to follow.
He exhaled when Frankenstein closed the door behind him, shutting off most of the sound. There were other windows in the corridor, but the sound didn’t carry as well through them. Tao followed them, and M-21 concentrated on not kicking him as Tao insisted on trying to twine between his limbs.
Down to the lab, and for once, each step further into the lab made M-21 relax as he was surrounded by the low hum of machines rather than the drumming rain.
"Not there, M-21," Frankenstein said, making him pause. M-21 looked between the main lab doors and to Frankenstein, who was standing at a different corridor. They weren't going to the main lab? Then where...?
M-21 followed, studying the corridor as they walked. He hadn’t been there before, so he didn't know what Frankenstein wanted him to do here.
"Here we are," Frankenstein said, opening one of the doors.
M-21 poked his head in and...
It was an empty room. White tiles covered the floor, walls, and ceiling, and that was it. The room was about the size of Frankenstein's office, but it looked so much bigger because there was nothing else taking up space.
Tao dashed in, running and exploring at the same time.
M-21 looked up at Frankenstein, tilting his head. What was this?
"This should be quiet enough for you," Frankenstein said, walking in, and M-21 followed him. Quiet enough for what?
When Frankenstein sat down, leaning against a wall, he patted the floor next to him, a gesture M-21 knew meant he was sit next to him. M-21 did as he was told, and he closed his eyes when Frankenstein started scratching his chest, leaning into the touch.
"Is this better?"
Better? He couldn't hear the rain here and...
Oh.
Was that why Frankenstein had brought him here?
But. M-21 opened his eyes, looking Frankenstein over. Didn’t he have work to do?
Frankenstein chuckled, continuing to scratch M-21. "I do need breaks as well. The storm shouldn't be around for too long, and I guess I should furnish this room so there's more interesting things inside it. We could make them right now in fact, while we wait for the storm to abate. Do you want to do that?"
While M-21 considered the question, Tao climbed up onto Frankenstein's lap, purring.
Hmm. M-21 shook his head, and pressed his forehead against Frankenstein's shoulder. He didn't want to go anywhere else right now...
"All right," Frankenstein murmured. "We'll think about that later."
Yes. When there wasn't a storm raging overhead.
