Kaoru frowned when Kojiro winced putting his plate down in front of him. "Did you fall on your head last night?" Kojiro had been fine at S, and a fall anywhere else would have been fine, since Kojiro was so densely padded.
"Nah," Kojiro said, leaning his left hand on Kaoru's table, not his right, like he usually did. "I was attacked by a dog." He lifted his arm up and Kaoru could see a sliver of bandage poking out from underneath his sleeve.
Well, that wasn't what Kaoru had expected. "Did you get it checked out?"
"Yeah, of course I did. All I've had is some pain, that's it." Kojiro grinned at him. "What, worried about me?"
Kaoru glared at him, and Kojiro was just out of reach of a kick. "I was just trying to imagine a gorilla wrestling with a puppy."
Kojiro glared back. "It was huge! Big enough to knock me off my 'board!"
"Or did you fall just from the surprise?" Kaoru shot back.
It sounded like aside from the wound, Kojiro was still himself. Kaoru was glad for that as they continued bickering.
*
Kaoru kept an eye on Kojiro over the next couple days but he seemed fine, and eventually Kojiro stopped favouring his arm.
It was a little under a month later when Kaoru caught Kojiro wincing again. "Are you sick, or did you get bitten by another dog?"
"I've been keeping an eye out for any more dogs," Kojiro said, pinching the bridge of his nose. "I'm just a little under the weather - been preparing for a big group and it feels like I might have caught something in the meantime."
"Then you should have stayed at home, idiot."
"And close the restaurant?" Kojiro shook his head. "I'm not that ill. No sneezing or a fever - I'm just a little slower than usual."
Kaoru rolled his eyes. "Clearly." But if that was the case, he would take it easy on Kojiro, and not bicker with him.
As much.
*
Kaoru peered around, but he couldn't see Kojiro around the usual crowd at S. Hmm. They normally arrived at the same time, making their entrance together, but Kojiro still wasn't to be seen as the first beef started.
Kojiro might have been late locking up, or held up with something. But to be this late...
Kaoru's thoughts drifted to how Kojiro had acted a few days before.
If he truly had caught something and it had worsened...
It would be better Kojiro stayed at home.
*
Kojiro still hadn't appeared by the time they dispersed for the night, and it put Kaoru's mind at ease. Then he didn't have to see Kojiro trying not to sneeze or trying to pathetically think of a retort with a fuzzy mind. Whatever he was symptoms he was feeling.
Kaoru still found himself driving in the direction of Kojiro's home, just in case the idiot needed something.
He wasn't far from Kojiro's home when he slowed, seeing something under one of the street lamps. A pile of clothing was strange, but Kaoru's stomach lurched when he noticed the 'board only a short distance away from it. The very familiar 'board.
Kojiro's 'board.
Kojiro wouldn't leave his 'board for any reason, and Kaoru looked around, trying to find any hint of what had happened to him.
His eyes were drawn back to the pile of clothes.
...He recognised those too.
Kaoru sighed as he stopped his 'bike by the pile, picking them up. Yes, they were indeed Kojiro's. A quick check revealed Kojiro's keys and wallet were still in his pockets, so he hadn't been mugged, and there was a lack of blood or holes to say he'd been attacked.
Kojiro had become feverish and the idiot was running around naked. Wonderful.
Kaoru stuffed Kojiro's clothes into his storage, securing his 'board to the back, and started looking for him.
*
The streets were quiet as Kaoru drove around, not seeing a hint of Kojiro. He didn't hear any screams either, and that was a good thing, because it meant Kojiro hadn't been spotted. It would have been nice to have some direction to aim for, though.
He drummed a finger on the handlebar as he waited at the lights, still trying to find any distinct movements. Maybe the police had already picked him up - it must have been hours since he stripped down.
It would mean Kojiro was-
Something loomed in the shadow of a nearby alley, drawing Kaoru's attention to it. It was a dog.
Vaguely.
It stood more than a head taller than the biggest dog Kaoru had ever seen. There was something about the shape of it that didn't look right. Too broadchest...
Right there, nestled between the dog's fur was a familiar triangular necklace.
That couldn't be right. But a dog wouldn't coincidentally wear Kojiro's necklace either. "Kojiro...?" he said.
The dog's ears perked up at the name, and its fur was the same as Kojiro's as well.
The lights changed and as soon as Kaoru started moving towards it, the dog disappeared.
Shit. Kaoru chased after him, and the dog was further ahead by the time he reached the alley.
Kaoru continued following him around the back streets, and was he going insane? He was chasing a dog, just because he thought Kojiro had - what? Turned into a dog?
It only made slightly less sense than Kojiro running around naked because he was feverish.
He glanced up when they hit a main street and the full moon peeked out from the clouds.
And Kojiro had been bitten last month...
"Carla," he muttered, still not gaining on the dog, "what phase was the moon in when Kojiro was bitten?"
He only had to wait a second. "The full moon, Master."
That still didn't mean what he thought it did. It could just be a coincidence.
He thought, while still chasing the dog.
Under the street lights, Kaoru could see the shape of the dog better. It had a blunter snout than most, that he could see whenever the dog checked on him over its shoulder; the limbs were longer too, ending in larger paws that almost looked like they could be hands, rather than round paws. The dog was hunched over as it ran, as if it were built to stand more upright, almost like-
Well.
A gorilla.
"Kojiro!" Kaoru tried again.
The dog's ear twitched, but that was the only reaction he got.
Aside from the tail wagging even more.
Kaoru narrowed his eyes at him. "At least one of us is enjoying ourselves."
He hissed when he realised Kojiro was leading them to the riverbank and his 'bike wouldn't be able to follow through the barrier.
Kojiro hopped over it in one bound, making Kaoru roll his eyes. "Still showing off, I see." It seemed Kaoru was still in there, buried underneath all the instincts.
Kaoru swerved to a stop, grabbing his keys as he hopped off his 'bike, grabbing Carla in his other hand.
He had enough momentum to vault over the barrier, settling Carla in place as he cleared it. Kojiro was still in sight. Waiting for him.
As soon as he landed, Kojiro was off again, tail wagging.
"You're just playing with me, aren't you?" He was faster on the 'bike, but on Carla, Kojiro was still the same distance away, always in sight. Checking if he was still following.
Hmm.
Up and down a bridge, around streets that were so small it didn't seem like Kojiro should fit through them.
Kaoru exhaled as they hit a steep hill, and he crouched down. This could be the only chance he had of catching up with Kojiro.
As each second passed, he gained speed, seeing Kojiro's ears pinned on him. He was close enough that his fingers could brush Kojiro's tail, but he didn't grab it. He needed to off-balance or draw even with Kojiro, not be dragged behind him.
Kaoru couldn't help grinning though as he pushed the speed as much as he could, catching up bit by bit. He hadn't raced like this with Kojiro in a while; now if they could do it again when Kojiro wasn't a transformed wolf...
He exhaled, seeing the corner coming up and he slowed so he could take it, Kojiro pulling ahead again. Damn. Fine, Kojiro won that one.
He slowed to the stop after the corner, setting his foot down. He needed a new plan of attack rather than just chasing after Kojiro - it clearly wasn't working.
But what could he do?
He didn't have anyt... Kaoru glanced out the corner of his eyes, seeing Kojiro standing there. He hadn't ran off. As always.
...Well, he could try that. He was done following after Kojiro for the night.
Kaoru turned away, hearing a soft whine as he did so, pushing off.
He'd barely started moving when he heard the click of claws come up behind him. He smiled. He was right.
As Kojiro lined up to trot next to him, Kaoru snapped his hand out, grabbing Kojiro's necklace. "Got you." Finally.
Though it wouldn't be much use as a leash if Kojiro decided to run. Kojiro didn't, looking at him, his head tilted and damn grinning at him.
"Now will you stay put?"
Kojiro sat, making Kaoru spin around to make sure he didn't get too far ahead.
"Oh, now you listen to me," Kaoru grumbled, studying Kojiro. This close, the dog did have the same eye colo-
Kojiro lunged at him, swiping his tongue over Kaoru's face, from chin to forehead.
"Eugh, I hope that wasn't your attempt at a kiss." Far too messy, even if his mask had protected him from most of it.
That didn't seem to put Kojiro off, nuzzling at Kaoru's chin, making him snort.
"Do you want to go home now?" Now that Kojiro had had his fun.
Kojiro nodded, bounding away, Kaoru's grip slipping from his necklace.
"Oi, I need to get my 'bike first," he said.
Kojiro huffed, changing directions as Kaoru lead the way back.
Kaoru's bike was fine when they got to it and he loaded Carla up. "We should go to your place," he said as he started the engine, watching Kojiro's tail wag again. It was closer, so would lessen the chance of anyone seeing Kojiro like this.
Together, they went to Kojiro's home, Kojiro running alongside him.
*
"Can you even fit?" Kaoru asked as he opened Kojiro's door, eyeing him. He seemed too wide for it.
Kojiro huffed, squeezing through. Huh, so a lot of his bulk was just his fur.
Kaoru went in and closed the door, leaning back on it with a sigh. They hadn't been seen as far as he could tell. They were safe now. He set down Carla and Kojiro's 'board down next to him, putting Kojiro's clothes on top of his 'board.
Kojiro hadn't gone far, nuzzling at Kaoru's cheek. He patted Kojiro's snout, staring into his eyes. If Kojiro was a werewolf, this would wear off in a few hours, wouldn't it? He wouldn't stay like this, would he?
Kaoru would just have to hope so. He looked Kojiro over again, frowning. "Do you need food?" Kaoru was normally hungry after a night at S, and how much energy had Kojiro used up just transforming like this?
Kojiro perked up at the word, turning towards the fridge.
A yes, then.
It didn't take long to find some leftovers and heat them up, Kojiro sticking close to him, watching his every move.
"I'm not going to burn it," Kaoru told him, rolling his eyes. He may not be a chef like Kojiro, but he could heat up food and cook.
He set the plate on the table, and Kojiro forewent any utensils, digging in, his paws braced on either side of the plate. Kaoru watched him for a second, before sitting down.
He tried to get his thoughts in order, but they swirled around, only focusing on the fact there was a giant werewolf eating a midnight meal in front of him.
It had only been a minute before Kojiro paused, looking at him.
"What?" Did he need something else?
Kojiro looked back at his plate, and then nudged it over in Kaoru's direction.
Oh. "...Thank you, but I'll have my own plate," Kaoru said, pushing Kojiro's plate back to him. Yes, he should eat after everything that had happened.
It was quiet while they ate and it was strange. Kaoru was used to talking with Kojiro when they ate together; Kojiro was physically there, just not quite mentally.
Kaoru yawned as he finished, his fork almost slipping from his hand. He looked over when Kojiro hooked his claws on his wrist guard, tugging him towards the bedroom.
"In a minute," he said as he stood up, hearing Kojiro whine. "I need to clean this up first."
"Hrrr."
Kojiro picked up his own plate with a hand, and maybe that was a sign he was starting to think again? Or he knew to do that before, but just didn't.
It didn't take too long to wash everything, and wipe down the table, and as soon as he was, Kojiro was nudging him towards the bedroom again.
"You're that impatient for me to be in your bed?" Kaoru said, snorting. He didn't resist, the bed calling to him.
Kojiro settled down first, curling up there, watching Kaoru as he sat down next to him, taking out his contact lenses and removing his wrist guards.
Kaoru heard his tail thump once against the bed, before Kojiro wrapped a paw around his waist, dragging him closer.
"Very impatient." He was surrounded by Kojiro's fur, his heat seeping into him.
He should stay up, make sure that Kojiro transformed back, that he didn't wander off again, but Kaoru couldn't fight his heavy eyelids, drifting off immediately.
*
Kaoru woke up slowly, and he was greeted with Kojiro's chest as sunlight filtered in through the window. Kojiro had transformed back. Good. Kaoru exhaled, closing his eyes, but he heard Kojiro groan.
"Urgh." He didn't move when he felt Kojiro's hand go through his hair. "Kaoru?"
"You're finally awake," he grumbled, seeing the pale teeth scars across Kojiro's arm.
"Why are..." Kojiro peered at him, confusion written all over his face. "What happened?"
"You apparently weren't bitten by a dog last month," Kaoru said, "but a werewolf."
Kojiro blinked. "You serious?"
"Can you think of any other reason why you'd be naked while I'm here?"
Kojiro chuckled at that, leering at him, drawing him close. "Hey, I stay here. I can think of a few reasons why I'd be naked."
Kaoru shoved his face away with a snort. "Then both of us would be naked, idiot."
"I could help with that." Kojiro didn't seem to determined to try anything, just kissing his hand instead.
"You don't seem all that perturbed at the fact you've turned into a werewolf."
"I dunno," Kojiro said, shrugging. "You sure you didn't dream all of it?"
Damn, Kojiro didn't remember what happened last night. It felt too real to Kaoru, even it made no sense, but he had no proof, even if Kojiro had woken up naked. He'd brought Kojiro's clothes in with him - and Carla.
"Carla," he said, hearing her whirr to life in the other room, "do you have any recordings of last night?"
"Of course, Master."
Good. "Then you'll see once I've set her up," he said as he got up.
"Sure, sure," Kojiro said, yawning.
Kojiro was still waking up, but that made sense with what his body had just gone through. He didn't seem to be complaining of hunger or thirst, so their late meal must have helped.
Kaoru reviewed the recordings as he set Carla on the table, exhaling in relief as he saw the wolf run around in front on the screen. He hadn't imagined it.
"There," Kaoru said as Kojiro left his bedroom, pulling a shirt on. "I didn't dream it."
"Are you s..." Kojiro trailed off, his eyes going wide as he saw the recording. "Okaaay," he drew out, as the wolf version of him kept ahead. "So you chased a large dog last night. Did you get bit?"
"No," Kaoru said, crossing his arms as he watched the footage, his mind clearer now that it was morning and it was no longer in the moment. Though if it was a bite that had made Kojiro into a werewolf... Was it only through a bite, or saliva? He lifted a hand, tracing where his mask rested at his neck. Had that protected him from potentially becoming a werewolf himself? "Keep watching."
He'd chosen when he'd finally caught Kojiro for the next clip, and he heard Kojiro suck in a breath when his necklace glinted into view.
"Starting to believe me now?" Unless Kojiro thought he would go so far as setting this up and making a replica of his necklace just for this.
"I... Yeah," Kojiro said faintly.
The last clip was Kojiro pushing Kaoru to bed, just before Kaoru took his contacts out.
"Do you see a large wolf here?" Kaoru asked, even though it wasn't needed. He'd made his case clear.
"Shit..." Kojiro said, still staring at the projection.
"You seem fine now," Kaoru said, looking him over. Kojiro was acting the same as he always did, and he looked like nothing had been left of his transformation.
"Yeah, I guess," Kojiro said as he ran a finger over the bite mark. He let out a long breath. "I guess I'm going to keep a closer eye on the phases of the moon, huh?"
Kaoru nodded. They would need to, so there were no more surprises. "I'll make sure Carla reminds us closer to the time."
Kojiro blinked at him.
"Did you think you'd be doing this alone?" Kaoru raised an eyebrow at him. Really. After his entire speech before.
"I..." Kojiro broke out into a big smile, and that was the far more preferable look on his face. "Thanks, Kaoru."
"Just don't get bitten by any other supernatural animals in the meantime," Kaoru said as he turned Carla off. Who knew what would happen then.
It would figure the first fic I write for a new fandom is making someone into a werewolf, aha.
