The back garden was covered by a thick blanket of white, M-21 seeing the snow still falling.
“M-21,” he heard as he approached the garden door and he paused, ears pricked towards the voice.
It was Frankenstein, holding a piece of grey clothing in one hand, though it was smaller than the ones M-21 usually saw.
“I’d like you to wear this coat when you’re outside,” Frankenstein said, shaking it open so M-21 could see it clearly. Now that M-21 knew who it was for, he could see it was more his size, the arm holes bigger. Instead of a big fabric tube, it was more like a cloak with a strap hanging off one side.
Why had Frankenstein made him human-like clothes?
M-21 stepped closer, Frankenstein wrapping it around his body, the strap looping underneath him.
“While your fur grows back,” Frankenstein said as he snapped the strap into place with a magnetic click, “you can wear this so you won’t feel the cold as much.”
M-21 shook himself when Frankenstein let go - the coat didn’t move, the fabric pressing down on his fur. He looked at Frankenstein, not understanding; he’d been in colder places with no trouble and his fur was fine. But Frankenstein had put the coat on him, so he wouldn’t take it off. Though if it was secured with a magnet instead of buttons or a zip, then Frankenstein had made it so he could take it off himself?
Frankenstein opened the door and M-21 left, the freshly fallen snow crunching under his paws.
M-21 had taken a couple steps when he paused, looking around.
It was still snowing, but he couldn’t feel it? Aside from the snow falling around him and at his paws, it was like he was still inside.
He spent longer outside than he usually would have in this weather, not needing to get away from the cold. When he went back inside, Frankenstein was still there waiting for him. He was next to a stand made of metal, a hook attached to a pole coming out at an angle, at the perfect height to reach the strap on M-21’s coat.
“How was it?” Frankenstein asked as M-21 nosed at the device.
M-21 nodded. It had kept him warm. So this was what it was like to wear human clothes.
“In case Master or I aren’t available when you come back in, you can remove the jacket by slipping the hook under the strap and twisting. That way, it’ll free the magnets.”
M-21 did as Frankenstein described and the magnet pulled away easily. He wriggled out the rest of the way and he hung his coat on the hook like he saw Frankenstein did with his own coat.
The way Frankenstein smiled at him when he was done made M-21 wag his tail.
“I made a few treats I thought you might like,” Frankenstein said, making M-21 perk up further.
He followed Frankenstein to the kitchen, and it wasn’t from the coat or from being inside that made M-21 feel warm all over.
M-21’s fur is patchier because of these stress he’d been under in the Union but he hadn’t noticed.
