“Great, you’re together! I don’t have to find both of you.”

M-21 looked across to the living room door where Tao was, who had a wide grin across his his face.

And was holding two large boxes piled on top of each other. Shoe boxes?

“Did you go shopping?” Takeo asked as M-21 made space on the sofa, Tao predictably aiming for between them.

“Nope.” Tao squeezed in between them and gave M-21 and Takeo a box each before leaning back with a sigh.

Intrigued, M-21 lifted the lid. And then rolled his eyes, hearing Takeo’s huff at the same time.

It was a pair of slippers, wolves stitched into them.

“I can see you smilin’, M,” Tao said, poking M-21’s cheek. “Don’t you deny it.”

“I’m not denying it,” M-21 said, Takeo pulling out his slippers to reveal bird designs on his slippers.

“Put ‘em on!” Tao said, wiggling again. “I wanna make sure they fit.”

“I’m sure they will,” Takeo said as he put his slippers on.

“Probably measured us in our sleep to makr sure,” M-21 said with a snort, putting his on as well. It was soft, his feet sinking in and he had enough space to wiggle his toes.

“I wouldn’t do that!” Tao’s eyes were wide. “Boss has your measurements and that’s way more accurate!”

Tao spent a few minutes poking at their feet before he was satisfied and they settled down to continue watching TV.

M-21 lay Tao down on his bed, Takeo covering him. Tao didn’t stir, still sleeping as deeply as he had when he’d fallen asleep on Takeo’s shoulder. It was only midday and if Tao had tired himself out that much…

M-21 and Takeo didn’t say anything as they left Tao’s room. When M-21 jerked his head towards the stairs, Takeo nodded and followed him outside.

They stopped in the middle of a park, where Tao wasn’t as likely to check the feeds.

“Tao keeps making us gifts,” Takeo said, scanning the area like he expected Tao to pop out of the shadows. Which was possible and wouldn’t be the first time Tao had done that.

“We need to pay him back somehow,” M-21 agreed. It didn’t feel…right that Tao kept making them things and he didn’t give anything back.

“Buy or make it?”

M-21 wrinkled his nose, imagining what their results would be if they tried to make it. “Buying would mean it’s better made than what we did.” And that it looked like it was supposed to.

Takeo smiled. “Tao should be asleep for a while.” It was the best time they had of Tao not knowing what they were doing.

“Then let’s go.”

M-21 moved through the shop, eyes flicking over the displays, his lips pursed. “See anything?”

Takeo shook his head. “Tao would like some more electronics but…”

“We don’t know exactly what he needs and he’d want something more powerful,” M-21 finished, sighing. Tao would have a list somewhere - they could find it later.

M-21’s eyes passed over to the make-up section. “Does he need more nail polish?” It was too small to be the only gift, but it was a start.

Takeo chuckled, heading for it. “Tao always needs more.”

They had a few bottles afterward - a variety of colours, and different types of black, including one that sparkled. Tao might not use the other colours, but M-21 and Takeo figured Tao could use them for other projects. Or Tao hadn’t bought them before because he didn’t have the money.

“Clothes?” M-21 mused. The three of them were still mixing clothes up and Tao would like the ones with phrases on them.

“Yeah.”

When Takeo slowed, M-21 did the same, following his gaze.

At the slipper section.

M-21 huffed, a small smile curling his lips.

“He did make us slippers,” Takeo said.

“He likes us all matching too,” M-21 added, heading for them. That narrowed down what they had to find.

“What animal would Tao be?” Once they figured what one to look out form

Takeo hummed. “With how he uses his calls and traps, a spider?”

M-21 blinked. “How he uses his cables?” From what he’d seen, Tao used them like a whip - spiders did that?

Takeo nodded. “He makes them into a web when he’s thinking or when he’s trapping someone.”

Huh. M-21 had never noticed that, but he didn’t pay too much attention to other people’s fights, trusting them to pull through. “Spiders then.”

Takeo studied him. “Were you thinking if something else?”

M-21 smirked at the question as he scanned the shelves for what they needed. “Goes where he wants, likes being alone but if he likes you, he’s all over you.” He paused, considering, then snorted. “He likes bringing gifts to people he likes.”

Takeo was smiling as the list grew. “A cat.”

“Yeah.”

“We can get both; Tao can choose which one he prefers.”

M-21 huffed. “He might try to put them both on at the same time.”

“If he does, we could record him when we give him the presents.”

M-21 could just imagine Tao’s reaction, smiling . “He’d like that.”

* * *

M-21 poked his head into Tao’s room and sighed. “He’s not here.” They hadn’t been gone that long - only an hour or so.

They’d come in through the front door so Tao wasn’t in the living room, which left a few obvious places. And knowing Tao -

“Security room,” M-21 and Takeo said together, Takeo slipping his phone back into his pocket as they went back downstairs.

The door was ajar when they arrived, the clack of keys coming from the room.

Tao didn’t react when they entered and M-21 sighed. “Tao.” Still nothing. M-21 tapped Tao’s head with a shopping bag. “Oi.”

“Huh?” Tao turned his head towards them, his eyes still on the monitors. “Time to eat?”

“No,” Takeo said. “We have something for you.”

Tao’s typing slowed. “Oooh?”

“Gifts,” M-21 said, and Tao stopped, spinning his chair.

“You got me stuff?” Tao said, his eyes wide as he made grabby motions towards the bags.

“You keep making us gifts,” Takeo said, recording on his phone as M-21 handed the bags over. Tao peeked inside one. “We wanted to repay-”

M-21 caught Tao when he flung himself at them, drawing them into a close hug.

“You guys are the best.”

M-21 huffed. “You started it.” By making the gifts in the first place.

“Yeah, because you’re awesome,” Tao said with a laugh. Tao used his cables to put his slippers on, one of each. “C'mon, I need to take as many pics of us and our new footwear!”
