That was most of the code done, and everything seemed to be running well so far. But he'd wait -Tao heard the door open behind him- just to make sure.

"Is it coffee time already?" he called out, eyes pinned on the screen. He'd check the time, but that wasn't impo-

Hands gripped him under the armpits and lifted him over his chair. "Uack!"

Tao was unceremoniously dumped on a bony shoulder and he saw his computer screen get further away with each step.

"M-21!" he wailed, because Takeo would have tried to talk to him before doing something like that, and purple hair wasn't tangling up in his fingers either.

"What."

"Don't you 'what' me!" The security doors closed in front of Tao's face and he sighed, trying to wriggle, but M-21's arm around him was unmoving. "I was working!"

"You've been working for ten hours straight. You need to get some fresh air."

"What am I: a plant?" Tao grumbled. He could use his cables to pry M-21's grip apart, but M-21 would just collect him again.

M-21 shrugged, moving Tao up and down. "Apparently. We need sunlight every day."

Tao turned his head to stare at him. "Eh?" Was that true? "Boss tell you that?"

"No." M-21 shrugged again. "The scientists talked about if it was better to let us out for a while every day or just give us supplements instead." He snorted, glancing at Tao. "You can guess what they decided."

Tao grimaced. "Why give us an extra chance to escape, and of cooourse they can make something more efficient than what we can get naturally." He sighed. "Still, you coulda asked."

"You would have said 'I'll go in five minutes'."

"I wouldn..." Tao trailed off, seeing the sun start to appear on the dark horizon from the living room, the sky pink. "Oh." It had been after dinner when he'd started working.

"Ten hours," M-21 reminded him, collecting something from the kitchen counter before heading for the garden door.

Getting to the roof took only a few hops and Tao hummed as he sat down, stretching his legs out in front him as he watched the sun rise.

"I mean, will I get sunlight when there's barely in the sky?" The time of day had to make a difference, right? He stretched, hearing his joints crack. Okay, that felt nice.

"More than you'd get underground," M-21 said, putting the plate of-

"Damn, you were prepared," Tao said, picking up one of the sandwiches. "We've got a picnic!"

"I figured you'd be hungry," M-21 said as Tao inhaled the first sandwich.

"Thanks!" He'd had dinner, but he'd been using his brain a lot for the code. "We should do this with Takeo next time." He knew Takeo would like the view - Takeo used to leave before the sunrise when they were in the DA-5.

Tao blinked when M-21 snorted. "What?"

"If there's a next time, we'll be grabbing you before the sun rises."

"Hey!"

"Especially since you'll be sleeping through it anyway."

"I won-" Tao couldn't finish, a yawn interrupting him. He couldn't even talk through it, the yawn demanding to go through first. "Ahem," he said, clearing his throat when it finally finished. "As I was saying, I wouldn't sleep through it." He could stay up for a couple minutes longer. Even though he was yawning again already.

"Right." M-21 handed him another sandwich and Tao ate that as well.

"'Kay, fine, so I'm feeling sleepy now." He could admit that, since his brain wasn't engaged with anything anymore. Tao yawned again and twitched when his head thumped against M-21's shoulder. "Maybe more sleepy than I thought," he mumbled. His eyes were already drifting closed and he needed five minutes. Just a small rest and he'd be wide awake again...
